Terry Pratchett play at the cinema

2010-02-15 00:00

THE work of legendary fantasy writer Terry Pratchett is heading to the big screen, courtesy of London’s National Theatre.

Cinema Nouveau Gateway will be screening Nation on Sunday, February 21, at 2.30 pm and again on February 24 at 7.30 pm as part of its NT Live theatre screenings, which started last year with Phedre, starring Helen Mirren, and continued with the superb Shakespearean production All’s Well That Ends Well.

Nation, which was filmed live at the National Theatre in London on January 30, has been adapted by Mark Ravenhill and is directed by Melly Still.

Set in a parallel world in 1860, Nation tells the story of two teenagers, Mau (Gary Carr) and Daphne (Emily Taaffe), who are thrown together by a tsunami that has destroyed Mau’s village and left Daphne shipwrecked on his South Pacific island, thousands of miles from home.

Mau wears next to nothing, Daphne a long white dress; neither speaks the other’s language; but somehow they must learn to survive.

Together they come of age, overseen by a foul-mouthed parrot, as they discard old belief systems to forge a new nation.

The show features live music, dance and extraordinary puppets, and is suitable for ages 10 and above.

Tickets are R120 and can be booked via www.sterkinekor.com or by calling TicketLine 082 16789 (value-added service rates apply), or at the cinema in Umhlanga.
