Tessa and Friends tackle domestic violence

2009-11-27 00:00

IF you still think of Pietermaritzburg as a sleepy hollow where women need to drive to Durban for any engaging, intellectual fun, well think again.

Monthly shows of Tessa and Friends on The Pink Couch (TFPC) is the brainchild of Tessa Green-Mills. She is the founder of the Women of Worth (WOW) Factor Institute, started in an attempt to contribute to the development of women and the restoration of their “self-image, value and dignity”. TFPC grew from this initiative and, according to Green-Mills, rides on the fact that women like to talk.

“Women talk about anything and everything. They have helped each other survive and thrive through centuries … lean and learn from each other …”

As is custom, the shows get to the heart of women’s issues. And in this season where South Africans are observing the 16 Days of Activism against domestic violence, their latest talk show will centre on rape and violence against women and children in South Africa.

Among their guests of honour will be rape survivor and founder of Protect Our Women Against Rape (POWAR) Jess Foord and celebrity guest East Coast Radio DJ Jane Linley.

Tickets go for R50 for the show, to be held at the City Royal Hotel in Burger Street tomorrow between 2 pm and 5 pm.

Legal advice and talks by a district surgeon, a psychologist and a representative of the South African Police Service are some of the events lined up for the Pink Couch.

All proceeds will be donated to POWAR.
