Thailand: SA embassy not concerned about terror threats

2012-01-14 00:00

DESPITE the U.S. embassy in Thailand issuing a travel alert to visitors over suspected terror threats, the South African embassy said that it will not be following suit.

The alert by the U.S. embassy cautions American tourists in the country that foreign terrorists may be currently looking to conduct attacks against tourist areas in Bangkok in the near future.

“U.S. citizens are urged to exercise caution when visiting public areas where large groups of Western tourists gather in Bangkok,” the warning read.

SA Ambassador to Thailand, Douglas Gibson, told The Witness that they are aware of the alert.

“… we believe that there is no threat to public safety. However, we are aware how quickly things can change and we are in constant contact with the Thai government,” said Gibson.
