Thanda Royal Zulu new sponsors want Richards Bay team in the big league

2012-11-16 00:00

THEY have one goal in mind — to see National First Division club Thanda Royal Zulu playing in the Premier Soccer League.

New sponsors Build It Zululand and local Spars have joined forces with long-time Thanda sponsor Bell Equipment to add “oomph” to Amabhubesi’s quest to play in the big league.

Making the announcement this week, team manager Thabani Gumede said it was encouraging to see local businesses supporting the Richards Bay-based team.

“What is the purpose of having a team in Zululand that has players from outside the region?

“This season we have 65% Zululand players. This has pleased local businesses, because they know that by supporting Thanda they are supporting their customers,” he said.

Gumede said that the team was grateful to its additional sponsors and called on other businesses to join the drive to acquire local support.

“If Thanda was to get promoted, it would change Richards Bay completely, and businesses would see an increase in turnover.”

Owner of four Spars in the uMhlathuze area Harry Giannacopulos said it was good to be involved with Amabhubesi.

“It’s a great honour that we’ve been allowed an opportunity to get involved with Thanda, the value of the soccer team to Zululand has added a new lifestyle to people because soccer is a universal language; we had to get involved,” said Giannacopulos.

On December 2, Thanda will take on Mpumalanga Black Aces in a home game that will be broadcast live on SABC1, with King Goodwill Zwelithini expected to attend.

Players will be mingling with local supporters tomorrow when they will be packing groceries for customers at Lakeside Spar between 12 pm and 2 pm, and on December 6 they will be at the Spar in Five Ways Mall in Empangeni between 12 pm and 2 pm.
