Thanda Royal Zulu’s court bid to halt promotion playoff match fails

2013-05-30 00:00

THANDA Royal Zulu’s court bid to stop last night’s PSL Promotion Play-off match between Santos and Chippa United was unsuccessful.

Thanda Royal Zulu had appealed the League’s ruling on abandoned games earlier this season and took their case to the courts in the morning, but a South Gauteng High Court judge ruled that the game must go ahead.

Thanda were disputing the final National First Division standings and seeking to get the playoffs stopped. They failed in their arbitration bid on Saturday.

Even before the court decision, the PSL’s former prosecutor, advocate Ntsietso Mofokeng, said any high court ruling in Thanda’s favour shouldn’t have a bearing on the match because the issue is beyond the court’s jurisdiction.

Thanda missed out on the playoffs on the final day of the season after a 1-1 draw at Mpumalanga Black Aces. They were among a number of clubs who boycotted matches at the start of the season.

The PSL ruled recently that the games would not be played and no points would be awarded for them. But Thanda were suggesting that the fixtures should be reinstated and the fixtures fulfilled.
