The 10 hottest football managers

2012-05-12 00:00

It’s no shocker that Jose Mourinho, Portuguese football manager and head coach of Real Madrid, makes the list of sexy football managers. A favourite among most women (and many men), the “Special One” is known for his quick tongue, refined dress sense and strong personality that oozes confidence, as well as being responsible for all the drool stains in the TV room. This 49-year-old cashmere wearer even has a thing for animals, can speak five languages and ooh la la those sultry eyes can give George Clooney a run for his money. It’s no wonder he ranked number nine on Askmen.com’s Most Influential Men 2010 list and claimed the Rockstar of the Year title in the Spanish

This 41-year-old Barcelona manager may be taking a year-long break from football at the end of the season to recuperate and lie in the bath with cucumbers on his eyes, but the balding, tanned Spaniard seems to get sexier with age. Josep (Pep) Guardiola is known for his impeccable style, his boyish good looks with just a hint of bad boy appeal and his fine taste in perfectly fitted suits. It’s easy to believe that he met his wife, Cristina Serra, in a clothing store at 18 … perhaps it was a match tailor-made in heaven?

Internaz-ionale Milano head coach Léonardo Nascimento de Araújo has the smouldering look down to an art. That, coupled with his long-and-perfect-to-run-your-fingers-through hair is enough for this 42-year-old Brazillian to make any women weak at the knees. He’s a pretty boy that you keep staring at, expecting him to whip out a comb from his back pocket to a crowd of women fighting to rip off his … tie. Yummmm …

While he had skills on the field, this ex-Man United player may not be all that hot as a manager, but he’s got the looks to keep us hoping. Paul Ince, former manager of Notts County, Macclesfield, MK Dons and Blackburn with his eyes on the Wolves, is a smoking, on the hot-or-not dial.

Born in 1967, this hunk of burning love once pulled a gun on Sir Alex Ferguson (as a prank) to get a spot in a game. So what’s if he’s crazy and a bit cocky, he’s all Man.

The youngest manager in the game to win a European title, Andre Villas-Boas (34) was recently sacked from Chelsea, but he’s not just all looks and no hooks. The only top- flight manager who never had a professional career, AVB is like the quiet nerdy guy that you never noticed until you see him on TV as the CEO of a big company. Called Mini-Mourinho, after being mentored by the “Special One”, this young heart-throb has “sexy” just waiting to be tattooed all over him.

Fulham manager Jean Tigana may be on the older edge of sexy football coaches, but this 56-year-old still has an appeal that would leave Tiger Woods facing closed doors in a challenge. Previously named “French Sudan”, Tigana is a former French midfielder and recently coached the Chinese Super League outfit, Shanghai Shenhua. He has those puppy-dog eyes that scream “sweetie pie” and, with news of him struggling and soon to possibly be sacked, you just want to hug him and tell him that everything’s going to be okay. Aw …

Steve Kompela may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think about sexy football managers, but his talent, prowess on the field and general athleticism just makes that high school girl in you want to be a cheerleader. He’s slick, sophisticated, has a sharp wit and sense of humour and a gift for the gab. He started his career at QwaQwa Stars, captained Bafana Bafana in the early 1990s, and played in Turkey where he even had his own very popular TV chat show … in Turkish. He’s always done well as a coach of Free State Stars, who are unlucky to be in fifth place this season, and was recently appointed assistant coach to Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane. He’s tipped to be a future Bafana head coach — we’re not complaining.

If you are a fan of the rough-around-the-edges look, Marco Simone, the head coach of Monaco in French Ligue 2, is your man. His designer hairdo and salt ‘n pepper stubble add to this Italian’s bad-ass appeal, making him look like a sleek mob boss with a good knowledge of shoes and sunglasses.

Doctor, Doctor, I think I feel a lump in my … throat. This Kaizer Chiefs playing giant and merchant of midfield style of the late 1980s and 1990s was a heart-throb to millions of South African women as a player and one of the first financial superstars of South African soccer. Yep, Doctor Khumalo is hot on the field and off, and he’s loaded too. He mostly fills in as a caretaker-coach at Chiefs when a head coach has been fired, such as his recent disposition after Vladimir Vermezovic’s dismissal. However, he does harbour ambition to be a head coach himself. Never married, this heartbreaker is always enjoying the playboy lifestyle, but we don’t mind being on his hitlist.

This long-term Bidvest Wits coach, Roger de Sa, has done some modelling too. He’s a mix of Portuguese and South African and looks like he could take on the Hulk. A goalkeeper for Moroka Swallows in his playing days, de Sa’s team have a tendency to play well in the first half of the season, but fade in the second... but hey, as long as he’s somewhere on the field to oogle over, who cares.
