The Joker is in town

2008-07-25 00:00

ONLY one new film opens locally this weekend, but it is a big one. Dark Knight will be showing at both Ster Kinekor and CineCentre. College Road Trip now joins the Nu Metro line-up with Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and Get Smart coming to Ster Kinekor.

Christopher Nolan directs Dark Knight, with Christian Bale as Batman, Heath Ledger as The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gary Oldman. The film broke box office records in the United States on its opening weekend, and is likely to be big here as well. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart), Batman has been making headway against local crime, until criminal mastermind The Joker (Ledger) unleashes a fresh reign of chaos across Gotham City.

The death of Ledger has obviously played its part in the hype surrounding this film, but his performance has people tipping him for the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch won one — the only one ever given posthumously — for Network. Reviews have suggested that the film has moved way beyond the comic book adaptation genre.

An interview with Heath Ledger

Check out a very restless Heath Ledger where he talks about playing the role of The Joker.
