The Ryan Calder Band in a multimedia show at the Hexagon Theatre

2010-05-20 00:00

FRESH from sell-out performances last year and a very successful Cape Town tour in April, the Ryan Calder Band (RCB) brings a brand new show for three consecutive nights to the Hexagon Dive at 7 pm for 7.30 pm on May 27, 28 and 29.

Following last year’s sold-out run of The Better Days Show, the RCB will be performing new songs from its latest album On The Edge, in a production that incorporates animated and video multimedia.

This year the band is building on last year’s show, which featured nods to the likes of Ben E. King, Cole Porter and Chuck Berry, and will also incorporate music from the first album Better Days.

The RCB, consisting of frontman and songwriter Ryan Calder (guitar and vocals), Roberto Hemmero (bass), Rudi Engelbrecht (drums and vocals), Jon Calder (piano) and Tamlyn Calder (vocals), has garnered widespread praise for its brand of music, which it terms “South African acoustic rock”.

“We like making music that makes people feel better about the world,” says Calder. “So far, it seems to be working.”

The air of positivity is a trait which has made the band popular in KwaZulu-Natal and has helped it attract a large following in and outside of the province.

The shows at the Hexagon Dive are in a picnic format. Take your own picnic dinner, but no drinks will be allowed into the venue — the bar will be open.

Tickets are R50 (R45 for bookings of tables of 10) at 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
