‘The Witness’ wins sponsor award

2014-08-27 00:00

THE Witness was rewarded for its support of the Hilton Arts Festival for the past 22 years with the Media Sponsorship Award at this year’s Business Arts South Africa (Basa) awards.

The company was one of 12 business and arts partnerships honoured at the awards at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg on Monday night. The awards are sponsored by Business Day and partnered by Hollard insurance.

Each winner received a stunning work of art created by Johannesburg-based photographer Lebohang Kganye.

Competitors in the category included sister paper Die Burger for Die Burger City of Cape Town Suidoosterfees; The Citizen for its arts publication, City; Desklink Media for the Arts and Culture Trust Awards, and the South African Art Times for Professional Practice in Visual Arts Seminar.

“Our annual awards are always a great opportunity to get a snapshot of how the arts and business are interfacing,” said Basa chief executive Michelle Constant.

During the evening, nominees and guests watched a performance of William Kentridge’s T ango for Page Turning, a film fragment made for the theatre piece Refuse the Hour (2012-13), and a performance by jazz singer and composer Melanie Scholtz, the Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2010, and Andile Yenana, the Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz for 2005.

And there was a surprise appearance by Joey, the star of the stage production War Horse. The stunning life-size puppet will be at The Witness Hilton Arts Festival, which runs from September 19-21, ahead of its performances in War Horse in Johannesburg and Cape Town later this year.
