The business of crime

2008-10-24 00:00

OPENING today on the local cinema circuit are Max Payne and Lakeview Terrace at Cine Centre, and Jerusalema which is coming to Ster Kinekor. Taken now joins the Nu Metro line-up.

There will be pre-release screenings of High School Musical 3 at Ster Kinekor on Saturday and at CineCentre on Saturday and Sunday. This is the third film in the franchise, and takes the kids into their senior year at school.

John Moore directs Max Payne, yet another video game that his been translated onto the big screen. Mark Wahlberg is the hero, tracking down those responsible for the murder of his wife and child in a nightmare world. Also in the cast are Mila Kunis, Chris O’Donnell, Ludacris and Beau Bridges.

Jerusalema has finally made it to the city. Directed by Ralph Ziman and starring Rapulana Seiphemo, Jeffrey Sekele, Ronnie Nyakale, Shelly Meskin and Malusi Skenjana, this locally made film takes a realistic and unwavering look into the gritty underbelly of crime and corruption in the new South Africa. The film chronicles the rise and fall of Lucky Kunene who wants a slice of the good life — however he can get it. The film has been well received locally.

Lakeview Terrace is directed by Neil LaBute and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington. It is the story of a black man, a cop, who makes life hell for his mixed-race neighbours. The film is a thriller, but one that asks probing questions about all kinds of assumptions. Reviews suggest that this is an ambiguous and complex film, one to make the audience think.
