The news gets made despite no lines

2012-07-07 00:00

A SEVERED Telkom cable knocked out both our telephone and data lines early yesterday and at the time of going to press last night it was still not repaired.

The problem may have been complicated by a burst water pipe that flooded Telkom’s Willowton exchange.

For readers and advertisers who failed to reach Witness staff on the landline yesterday or found that their e-mails were not replied to, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Our editorial operation was compromised and despite the efforts of many, including Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela, we remained offline.

However, as South Africa’s oldest newspaper, with a proud 166-year-old tradition of continuous publication, we were determined to hit the streets today.

Thanks to cellphones, 3G connectivity and personal e-mail accounts, the Witness team managed to produce today’s edition.

If necessary, we will do the same for Monday’s Witness, as we have no guarantee that the problem will be repaired by Sunday when we return to the newsroom. Angela Quintal, Editor
