The rise and fall of a diva

2009-01-22 00:00

“HAD a dreadful show last night. It didn’t help that my botox was nearly worn off and I’m squeezed into a size seven shoe. Eight just makes my feet look enormous.”

Thus begins the diary of a down-and-out diva, whose story is told by Tonya Koenderman. During the course of the show, we learn about her many faux pas, her hang-ups, her addictions, her fears and the not so glamorous side of show business.

Directed by Koenderman’s long-time friend Lisa Bobbert, Diaries of a Down and Out Diva is a funny, charming and sometimes downright embarrassing story of one diva’s climb to — then fall from — glory.

One quickly learns that being in show business is not all about glitz and glamour: there’s the time our diva falls flat on her face as she trips over a wire onstage, and when an enthusiastic audience member tugs at her skirt and the whole thing comes off. Oh, and let’s not forget about when an overzealous dancer removed more than just a jacket, leaving our diva nakedbreasted for all to see. Fortunately, she’d just had them done.

The story is interspersed with a range of great songs, including: I’m a Woman from Smokey Joe’s Café, Le Jazz Hot from Victor Victoria, I Who Have Nothing by Shirley Bassey, and It Was a Very Good Year by Frank Sinatra.

Diaries of a Down and Out Diva is being staged at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Avenue, off Bartle Road, in Durban, on January 23 at 8 pm, January 24 at 8 pm and January 25 at 6.30 pm. The venue opens 90 minutes before the show for a picnic dinner.

Tickets are R80 and booking is essential. Phone Roland at 031 205 7602 or 082 499 8636 or e-mail roland@stansell.za.net
