The undisputed facts

2013-10-04 00:00

AMID the noise surrounding Guptagate, there are several facts that have been proven or which emerged from reliable testimony. Below is a summary of these facts:

• A chartered jet with some 200 wedding guests from India landed at the Waterkloof air force base on April 30. The jet was chartered by the influential Gupta family and their guests to attend the wedding of one of the Gupta family members.

• Three faxes had been sent on April 9, April 23 and May 2 to authorise the Gupta landing, signed by Lieutenant- Colonel Stephanus van Zyl.

• The government’s high-level task team found that Van Zyl’s original order was issued on the grounds of “documentation that had been received and discussions that were held”. It is not clear which documents or with whom the discussions were held.

• The official report said the state’s head of protocol, Bruce Koloane, had told other parties at least three times that he was executing orders from “Number One”.

• The investigation team did not interview Lieutenant-Colonel Christine Anderson, Van Zyl, his commander, Brigadier-General Les Lombard, the Waterkloof commander Brigadier-General Sam Madumane or members of the Gupta family.

• The initial investigation held that Koloane and Anderson were responsible for the illegal landing.
