Theatre: History without the boring bits

2008-03-06 00:00

De Compleat Hstry of Dbn — Without the Boring Bits is set to return to the Catalina Theatre untill March 15.

This is Themi Venturas’s historical comedy show, created in the style of The Compleat Wrks of Wlm Shkspr (Abridged), which sets out to celebrate the unique history (without the boring bits) of the town “discovered” on Christmas Day by Vasco de Gama, who, apparently, was on a voyage to get away from his nagging wife and a persistent tax man.

The potted history seeks to tell the stories behind the historical facts, peppered with occasional ditties, parodies and traditional songs from the city’s earliest history until today.

The show ran over the festive season and there was such interest from the public and schools, that it has been brought back to cater for additional demand.

The cast, who play a multitude of roles, are Hamish Kyd, Frank Graham and Mabel Mthombeni, Holly Boulind and Kajal Bagwandeen (Chalo Cinema, Bombay Crush) who alternates with Mayuri Naidu (Sasol Fever).

Costumes are designed and created by Hugo le Roux and Jannie Engelbrecht. Music is by Themi Venturas and Tiki Nxumalo, and the time-line backdrop cartoon is created by Ewok.

Phone the Catalina Theatre at 031 305 6889.

Shows are at 11 am Tuesday to Friday, 8 pm on Friday and Saturday and 6 pm on Sunday.
