Thieves steal from temple

2010-02-24 00:00

THE deities at the century-old Sri Siva Soobramoniar and Mariamen Temples in Langalibalele Street, the place of worship for thousands of Hindus, have been stripped of the gold chains (thalis) that hang around their necks.

Although in the past, several hundred rands have been carried away in the vessels in which worshippers place cash offerings during their visits to the temples, the latest theft has shocked the congregation and the public.

Details of the theft are sketchy and the high priest at the temples, Sri Viswanathan Gurukal, and senior official Prega Padayachee are “tight-lipped” for fear of more thefts.

“We are exposing ourselves to further robberies should this receive publicity,” they said.

From outside sources, The Witness gathers that during the holy week of Navarathi, culminating in the night-long vigil of Shivarathri, somebody had entered the moolastanam (the area in which the deities are housed), a strictly “no-go area” to the general public.

The sources said that when the high priest went to conduct the abishagieum (bathing of the deities) prayers early on Monday, he discovered the theft.

Police are investigating a case of theft.
