Third abduction, robbery incident

2014-10-07 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man caught in the clutches of gun-toting criminals pretending to be police officers, kept his cool and co-operated to survive the ordeal.

Speaking to The Witness, the man who asked not to be named, said he felt lucky to be alive. “They did not hurt me, I suppose because I did not resist.”

They robbed him of R15 000 and dumped him near the Lion Park.

He was the third person in the city to be abducted and robbed by the conmen.

A woman was robbed of more than R20 000 and another man of R5 000; both had withdrawn some of the money they lost from banks.

Police say the two were also drugged.

The syndicate have apparently revived an old scam, luring unsuspecting people by throwing a money bag on the ground and then diving for it when their victim spots it. They then convince the unwitting victim to go to a secluded area to split the money, but then the bogus police arrive to bust them.

The man said the conmen used a slightly different modus operandi.

“I was walking along Commercial Road in town when I was stopped by a hawker. One person, I believe was part of [the scam] stopped me, to sell me something. As I was paying attention to that person, the three in the car stopped next to us.”

The men, posing as police, demanded to search him.

“They looked legitimate, the car they drove looked like a detectives’ car and they also had police identification cards,” he said.

He said they told him to get into the car to drive to the police station.

“But as soon as I got into the car I was accosted …”

SAPS spokesperson Captain Zenzele Ndlovu said police are investigating the three incidents.
