Third assault at the Lighthouse

2011-11-02 00:00

A THIRD assault has taken place at the notorious Lighthouse Pub and Grill in Margate.

This time a patron claims he was assaulted by a staff member. The incident occurred on Friday at about 11 pm.

Simphiwe Madlala (29) said he was playing pool when an altercation occurred between him and another patron.

“He approached a senior staff member for help, but was assaulted instead,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Phumzile Makaula.

The police report states that Madlala sustained serious injuries to his head.

“He also had severely bruised elbows,” said Makaula. Police are investigating common assault and nobody has been charged yet.

Ramsgate Court is currently hearing two cases related to violent incidents that took place at the Lighthouse Pub and Grill.

Lwandile Mampofu (26) was allegedly assaulted by four men at the pub on August 13 after an altercation over a cigarette.

He sustained serious injuries and later died in hospital. Four men, Jakes Putter, Douw van der Walt, Petrus Opperman and Carel Volschenk were arrested, following information from eyewitnesses. The case continues on Thursday.

In another incident, Johannes Frederick Cranco (25) was released on bail for allegedly assaulting three holidaymakers at the pub on September 29. He faces one charge of attempted murder and two charges for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The case will be heard in court on December 1. Margate police have issued a letter to the Provincial Liquor Board to have the pub’s liquor license revoked.

“It is a very long and involved process and we are currently waiting for feedback,” said Makaula.
