Thirst for fairness ends in ‘bottomless glass’ record

2013-01-16 00:00

THE “Cream Soda Man” of Vaalpark yesterday established an unofficial record for drinking the most refills as part of a “bottomless glass” promotion by a local fast food franchise.

In less than two hours, Hennie Wolmarans asked for and got 26 refills in a glass, each time emptying the 300 millilitres of cream soda through a straw.

He said that by drinking a total of 7,8 litres of the sweet cooldrink, he was trying to hammer home the point that when a restaurant makes a “bottomless glass” offer, it better be just that. This after a waitress in another restaurant had told the thirsty patron “he had had enough” after seven glasses.

Len Muller, co-owner of the Wimpy Arconpark, which had challenged Wolmarans to try to find the bottom in their bottomless offer, agreed with Wolmerans.

“Maljan”, a presenter on Radio Jacaranda FM, tried to keep up with Wolmarans but could only swallow 17 glasses.

Explaining his thirst, Wolmarans simply said: “I am a big man.”

He added he easily quaffed a glass in eight seconds.

Douglas Mbewe, who has been working at the Wimpy for almost four years, said he had never seen any patron drink so much cooldrink in one go.

Nicky Correia, executive director at Wimpy, said the challenge was all in fun, but stressed that at Wimpy, they believed in responsible consumption of food and cooldrink on their menu.
