Thomas More hockey players head for the Netherlands

2014-03-18 00:00

THE boys’ and girls’ first hockey teams from Thomas More College fly to the Netherlands on Friday for a two-week tour, the first overseas hockey tour undertaken by the school.

Manager Coral Steenkamp said, “We chose to head for the Netherlands as they are the top hockey nation in the world and exposing our teams to strong opposition, while throwing in top class coaching, will benefit them hugely for the season ahead.”

The touring party has 33 players, two coaches (Wanri Venter and Mike Lees), Steenkamp and school headmaster Allan Chandler.

First stop is Amsterdam, with the tourists then heading in an anti-clockwise direction, visiting Bloemendaal, Wassenaar, Rotterdam, Roosendal, Eindhoven, Arnhem and Drachten.

A total of seven matches are being played and the players are attending two coaching clinics, while being hosted by various clubs.

Away from the hockey, the tourists take in some cultural sites including a tour of the Anne Frank Museum, Efteling Theme Park, Snow World and De Hoge Veluwe National Park.
