Thornville: Two patients killed in ambulance crash

2009-04-16 00:00

TWO women patients are dead and two pregnant women are in hospital after a serious accident on the R56 between Richmond and Thornville yesterday.

Head of the collision unit, Captain Dolf Otto, said an ambulance taking two patients to uMzimkhulu from Edendale Hospital collided head-on with a VW Jetta driving towards Pietermaritzburg.

Otto described the road as “bendy”. He said the accident occurred just before 5 pm near the first Baynesfield turn-off. The two patients were thrown out of the ambulance and killed. The two ambulance staff, one a pregnant woman, were injured, as was the car’s driver, who is also pregnant. Otto said the car driver was travelling alone.

Names could not be released as the families have to be notified first.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated and both vehicles will be examined for mechanical faults.

KZN Health spokesman Chris Maxon said the patients had probably been booked on a planned patient transport from a small hospital to a bigger one.

“They normally come early in the morning and they are later taken back.”
