Threads of history: Bead art for Paris show

2013-04-18 00:00

TEN Midlands women have sewn together thousands of beads to create a unique tribute to former president Nelson Mandela.

Christopher Till, director of the Apartheid Museum, told The Witness that he had commissioned the Impumelelo Bead Co-operative — which is based at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, near Lion’s River — to create the artwork, which is 2,2 metres high and 1,5 metres wide.

It will form part of an exhibition taking place in Paris in May and June.

The panel — which took the beaders two-and-a-half months to make — will form part of “Nelson Mandela: From Prisoner to President”, which pays tribute to the former president’s remarkable life.

The exhibition is part of the France-South Africa Seasons 2012 and 2013 events, which began in SA last year and are continuing in France this year. The exhibition will be hosted, in partnership with the City of Paris, at the Hotel De Ville from May 29 to July 6.

“It’s quite something that this group of women has not only produced this panel, but two years ago they made a work which was bought by the Museum of Art and Design in New York,” Till said.

“They have an international reputation.”
