THREE Kwazulu-Natal athletes have been named in the youth team of 30 athletes confirmed by Athletics South Africa (ASA) to compete in the IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy, from July 8 to 12.

Sprinter Justine Palframan, who earned three gold medals from the 200 m, 400 m and medley relay at the recent Southern Region Championships, will be joined by Happiness Mkhize in the 800 m and Tebogo Khanye in the 1500 m.

ASA believes the team includes a number of exciting young prospects who will form part of their development strategy leading towards the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Two months shy of a decade after the seventh Athletics World Championships, ASA have received the bronze medals for the 4x400 relay, originally won by the U.S. Following the suspension of Antonio Pettigrew for a doping offence, the results of the 1999 championships were revised to give Poland victory. The readjustment puts Jamaica in silver position with the South African quartet third.

Runners are invited to attend a fun run to raise funds for Frankie Cawdry, the athlete knocked over by a car in May. Entry fee is R20.More details will be in The Witness on Friday and are available from John Hall at 082 491 7679 or by e-mail at office@aghall.co.za
