Three KZN youth reps off to India for four-week visit

2007-12-27 00:00

Three youth representatives from KwaZulu-Natal left for India yesterday on a four-week visit, under the eighth Know India Programme (KIP). They are former Miss India South Africa, Nadia Vorajee, Renita Naicker and Dr. Tashira Ellapen. A farewell reception for the trio was hosted by the Consul General of India, Harsh Shringla.

For the KIP, participants will be hosted by the government of Tamil Nadu, in Chennai, and the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, in New Delhi. They will also participate in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Global Indian Diaspora) 2008 Conference in New Delhi from January 7 to 9, which is expected to be attended by some 2000 prominent Indians from different parts of the world.

The KIP is organised biannually by the government of India to enable Indian youths, between the ages of 16 to 25 living abroad, to experience India in-depth. Applicants must distinguish themselves in an area of activity and have an abiding interest in India. To date, as many as 25 youths from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have been selected for the KIP.
