Three SA players in Presidents Cup

2011-11-17 00:00

THE Royal Melbourne Golf Club hosts the ninth Presidents Cup starting today in Australia. This tournament doesn’t quite have the same interest as the Ryder Cup to South African golf fans even though there are three SA players in the team of 12.

It is played biennially between the U.S. and the rest of the world outside of Europe.

The rankings decide the top 10 with two others selected by the captains. (Captain’s pick, as they call it) Fred Couples, the captain of the U.S. team, selected Tiger Woods and Bill Haas to play against the International team. Woods was picked on reputation only. It was a risk at the time because he hadn’t played much golf this year and when he did, he didn’t play well. There were three or four other American players who were in contention to be selected.

Greg Norman is captain of the Internationals and he picked a couple of Australian players as his “picks”. They are Robert Allenby and Aaron Badderly. Allenby in particular was a surprise selection because of his poor ranking but according to Norman, Allenby knows the Melbourne course very well. This selection kept Louis Oosthuizen out of the team.

Of the 12 players there are five Australians, three South Africans, three South Koreans and a Japanese.

The Melbourne venue was where the Internationals had their only victory in 1998 and there was a tie at Fancourt in 2003 when Woods and Ernie Els had that epic battle in the gloom of the late afternoon. Other than that, the Internationals have lost seven times but there seems to be a belief that history will repeat itself at the Melbourne course. We are in for an interesting four days of matchplay with Els, Retief Goosen and Charl Schwartzel flying the flag for South Africa. It’s early morning viewing which makes a change.

Last weekend’s results:

On Saturday, Maritzburg Golf Club held a combined Stableford competition sponsored by Parklane SuperSpar. The winners on 80 points were T. Kimberly and B. Austin. In second place on 75 points were J. Ackerman and M. Olivier.

Victoria Country Club held a 4-ball betterball Stableford competition on Saturday. The winners were R. Quarmby and P. Quarmby with 50, yes, 50 points. In second spot were B. Syder and J. Syder with 46 points.

From the 19th hole:

If you didn’t understand last week’s joke you are forgiven. Through no fault of your scribe, gremlins got into the text which confused everyone.

Three old golfers, Sam, Harry and Fred were sitting together after their weekly game of golf. These are some of the things they were overheard saying to each other:

Sam said: “I went to the doctor yesterday and told him that I keep having visions of the future. He asked me when these started. I told him next Thursday.”

Harry said: “I went to the doctor because some mornings I think I’m Mickey Mouse and other times I think I’m Donald Duck. The doctor asked me: “How long have you been having these Disney spells?”

Fred said: “I know I’m getting old but I can still multi-task, now I pee when I sneeze.”
