Three back-of-bakkie passengers killed in two days

TWO accidents involving passengers on the back of bakkies have resulted in three deaths in the past two days.

Two people died in an accident at Mafakatini on Monday night when a bakkie rolled down a bank. According to Andrew Rogers of ER24, the two who died had been on the back of the bakkie.

“Five people were taken to hospital; three with serious injuries and five with minor injuries.”

Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated. He said no arrests had been made by late yesterday.

In an accident yesterday, a person was killed when a bakkie transporting farm workers overturned on the R612 between Ixopo and Creighton, said Robert Mckenzie, the spokesperson for KZN Emergency Medical Services.

He said 13 patients were injured, with injuries ranging from critical to severe.

In another accident on Monday, a pedestrian was dragged for some distance after being struck by a car on the N3 near the Durban Road off-ramp on the northbound carriageway outside PMB. The man and the driver were both critically injured. Russel Meiring of ER24 said the badly damaged car was found resting against a tree. The driver, a man in his fifties, had been pulled out of his car by bystanders while others attended to the pedestrian.

“Both patients suffered severe head, neck and chest injuries and advanced life support was performed on them before they were rapidly transported to a nearby hospital.”
