Three held after chase with police

2014-07-21 00:00

A GROUP of three men aged between 31 and 36 years old were arrested after a long dramatic police chase in Northdale on Friday night.

It’s alleged that the men were in a bakkie when they pointed a firearm at an unmarked VW Golf 6 belonging to police.

“Police called for back-up and chased the bakkie. When a police van tried to block them, they managed to speed off,” said a source.

He added that the men did not stop but pointed a gun — believed to be a gas gun — directly at the police. Police then started shooting at them.

The car chase continued at high speed along Steeple Crescent, Regina Road, Springvalley Road, Deccan Road, Bombay Road and Newholmes Way.

“They were running red robots. They did not obey the blue light shown to them,” he said.

Two of the men were injured. ER24’s Andrew Rogers said they treated the two, one for a gunshot to the right shoulder and the other for a gunshot to the lower leg, and took them to hospital.

According to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, the three men were arrested and charged with pointing a firearm, attempted murder, reckless or negligent driving and resisting arrest.

“Three suspects aged between 31 and 36 were arrested and they will appear at Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today,” said Zwane.
