Three killed in spate of violence

2010-07-26 00:00

IN a spate of killings in the city last week, the caretaker of the Brickhurst Flats on Prince Alfred Street shot and killed a suspected thief whom he saw making off with goods belonging to tenants of the flats on Friday night.

According to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, the caretaker of the flats saw the deceased making off with a bicycle, a car radio and speakers that he believed belonged to some the tenants of the flats.

“He apparently gave chase after the thief, who turned around and pulled a knife on him …”

The caretaker pulled out a gun and shot the assailant dead, Zwane said.

In another incident, one person was killed, others were seriously wounded and another escaped with minor injuries during a drunken brawl at the Jika Joe settlement on Friday evening.

Settlement community leader Bheki Dladla said the three people who were stabbed and the person who stabbed them are not from the community.

On Thursday, Thembinkosi Ndlovu (35) was robbed of his cellphone and killed on Arthur Thompson Road in Willowton.

Zwane said Ndlovu was walking along the road when he was confronted by three unknown men who held him up.

An altercation ensued, which resulted in one of the suspects stabbing Ndlovu.

Zwane asked people with information to contact Warrant Officer Mbongeni Dladla at 033 387 9614 or on 083 596 6356. Anonymous callers should contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
