Three killed in taxi battle

2008-10-24 00:00

The ongoing war between two Durban taxi associations over routes has claimed three more lives.

The driver and two women were killed when armed men sprayed a taxi in the Mariannhill area with bullets in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Eight other passengers were seriously wounded.

Veldhuizen could not confirm whether the shooting was related to the ongoing taxi conflict in the area, but sources told Weekend Witness that the fight over taxi routes was behind the shooting.

The Zwelibombu and kwaNndengezi taxi associations have been feuding since October last year and five people have already been killed.

Two weeks ago, armed men opened fire on a taxi in the area.

In another incident, a 17-year-old, apparently driving his father’s taxi, was killed in a drive-by shooting in the Mariannhill area.

Three people were seriously injured when a taxi was ambushed a week ago.

Police recently raided several taxi ranks in the area and arrested 22 drivers from both taxi associations for operating without permits. A further 12 drivers were arrested three days later.
