THREE people were killed in a three-way pile-up on the Durban-bound N3 on Saturday.

A VW Caddy, Hyundai Atos and an 18-wheeler truck collided, leaving three people dead.

A 16-year-old boy in the VW Caddy sustained serious injuries, while two other people who were in the Atos sustained “moderate injuries”, said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

She said the Caddy was in pieces and two women and a man sustained fatal injuries.

The teenage passenger was placed on life support and taken to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital.

The passengers in the Atos were taken to RK Khan hospital by ambulance. Those in the 18-wheeler truck were not injured.

In another accident on the N2, nine people were injured when a taxi overturned past the Ballito off-ramp yesterday morning.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the fast lane obstructed with accident debris and the crumpled remains of the taxi. The patients were found at the side of the road,” said Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

“After extricating the injured from the wreckage, paramedics established that two people sustained serious injuries while seven escaped with minor injuries.” He said the injured were taken to hospital for further medical treatment.
