Three orphaned as man kills mum with her pistol

AN Umlazi township police constable was shot dead by her jealous lover yesterday morning.

Constable Zanele Shandu (39) and her boyfriend, Mlungisi Zungu (23), had a party for their one-year-old baby girl on Sunday afternoon. The party was held at Zungus’ home with some of Shandu’s relatives and friends in attendance.

Shandu’s cousin, Bongi Mnguni, told The Witness yesterday afternoon that as people began to disperse in the late afternoon, she noticed that her cousin’s eyes were red-, an indication that she had been crying.

“I asked her what was wrong and she said everything was fine. I probed for reasons and she said she felt like crying but would not say why. That was strange because we all enjoyed ourselves. We went home very late, leaving her washing the dishes,” said Mnguni.

Yesterday morning Shandu allegedly phoned another relative to fetch her from another part of Umlazi township to take her home.

Once home, Shandu reportedly told Mnguni that Zungu was abusive when he was drunk. “She told me that she had had enough, because once drunk, the man would remind her of past misunderstandings and would physically abuse her. “She showed us marks of beatings in various parts of her body,” said Mnguni.

Zungu, who arrived shortly after Shandu, reportedly apologised, but she would not hear of it.

“He then went to Zanele’s room, saying he wanted to fetch her clothes if he could not be forgiven. He knew where to find her service firearm,” Mnguni said.

When he came back he was carrying the constable’s service pistol and started chasing her around.

He shot her several times and left her lying dead at the back of the house. He came back and shot himself in the yard, said Mnguni.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said Zungu died in hospital. He said Umlazi police are investigating a case of murder and have opened an inquest docket.

“We are once again shocked at the untimely, tragic death of another dedicated officer,” said Naicker, adding she is the 13th police officer to be murdered in KZN since the beginning of this year. Shandu is survived by three children.
