TRAGEDY struck the Mdunge family in Rorke’s Drift near Dundee when three children suffocated to death after they reportedly locked themselves inside an old fridge that was inside a rondavel on Monday.

It is believed that the three were discovered by schoolchildren who were sent by their grandmother to look for the missing kids after she realised that they have been out of her sight for a long time.

The children, between the ages of three and six, were allegedly playing when they closed the self-locking fridge door and suffocated inside

Police spokesperson Lieutenant- Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the children were two girls and a boy. who

They were found dead at their home.

He said the circumstances leading to the deaths are unknown.

“Currently we have opened an inquest docket,” said Mdunge.

He said he still does not know the names of the children.

The deputy chairperson of the ANC’s Bhambatha region, Thulani Mahayi, said it was a terrible tragedy that happened to the Mdunge family. “We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and hope that God will strengthen them through this difficult period.”

A neighbour who did not want to be named said Social Development visited the family after they heard about the incident yesterday.

When The Witness called the ward councillor in the area, Thabisile Makaba, she said she was instructed not to give out any information. But she could confirm that the family was very emotional and “everyone was crying”.

The incident occurred as the provincial government launched its Child Protection Week in Nquthu.
