Thugs murder and rob woman (74)

2011-08-24 00:00

A 74-YEAR-OLD woman was stabbed to death on her way to an outside toilet at her home at Mvundlweni, Plessislaer, on Monday.

Tholwaphi Zondi was alone at home at about 7.30 am when she was attacked and killed.

Her assailants went inside, opened her safe and took R10 000 cash and a 9mm pistol.

A neighbour who noticed the suspects fleeing immediately went to investigate, discovered Zondi’s body and called the police.

Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said Zondi was accosted by three men, one of whom she is thought to have known. The money was to be used for a traditional function that Zondi had planned.

Zondi’s eldest daughter, Ntombikayise, said she phoned her mother at about 6.15 am on Monday.

She said she only goes home when she has days off from her job in Nottingham Road.

“I always phoned my mother early in the morning because she wakes up early to feed the dogs and chickens. We spoke and said our goodbyes. At about 10 am I received a call from a neighbour who told me to come home immediately. I just felt weak when I saw my mother lying on the ground …” she said.

Apart from the cash and firearm, the men stole a DVD player and other equipment from the house.

Ntombikayise said the money was her mother’s pension savings and that the firearm belonged to her late father.

Police said arrests are imminent.
