Thumbs-up for architectural programmes

2009-09-23 00:00

THE South African Council for the Architectural Profession (Sacap) has given the thumbs-up to architectural programmes at University of KwaZulu-Natal, in a special report that fully validates the university.

In 2008, concerns were raised about the standards of architectural programmes at UKZN and some students left the university to pursue their degrees overseas.

Students were concerned with the weak validation by Sacap and that their degrees would not be recognised. They blamed the mess on the lack of staff.

At a special media briefing, the head of the College of Humanities, Professor Fikile Mazibuko, said Sacap’s visiting board is satisfied that the undergraduate and masters programmes meet validation requirements nationally and internationally.

The visiting board represented the South African Council for the Architectural Profession, acting as Education and Training Qualification Authority for the council for Higher Education on behalf of the Commonwealth Association of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The findings of the report showed that the work standard has improved significantly and that the board is pleased with the delivery of the course.

“The board was amazed at the great improvements, especially in the perceptions from students and the level of pride and confidence displayed in the school,” said Mazibuko.
