Thwarted will: prince wanted a simple wedding

2011-04-29 00:00

LONDON — If he had his choice, Prince William would have preferred to marry Kate Middleton in a simple ceremony in her home village of Bucklebury, according to friends.

But because he is royal, the couple will be wed today with full pomp and ceremony in Westminster Abbey, watched by celebrities, politicians and up two two billion people worldwide.

To mark his last day as a bachelor, while Middleton and his brother Harry attended a last rehearsal at the Abbey, William played five-a-side football with some mates in Battersea Park, south London, and then rode home on his Ducati Corse motorcycle.

Today, when he enters the Abbey, many viewers will remember his mother’s funeral in 1997, when the 15-year-old prince and his little brother marched solemnly behind her coffin as the funeral cortege moved slowly through London.

But today is a happy day and the focus will fall on Middleton — and her dress.. Royal couple ‘deeply moved’ by good wishes; fans camp out at Abbey for best views; many Britons say they won’t watch: page 6
