Ticks: ‘Powders not enough’ in wet weather

2011-11-23 00:00

AFTER concerned dog owners have queried if there is a disease outbreak affecting their animals, Dr Claire Norton from the Bruggemann and Norton Veterinary Clinic said apart from ticks, dogs could also suffer pollen allergies.

“With the change of season there are a lot of pollens and humidity in the air. With the pollens comes allergies that could be affecting the dogs.” She confirmed there has been a definite outbreak of ticks and fleas after all the rain. “Owners must get something for the control of this especially with for the ticks,” he said.

Staff at the Marburg state veterinary clinic said they are also seeing an influx of dogs with tick bite fever. Norton strongly recommend a long-term solution to tick and flea control.

“The powders are not very effective. They only kill the fleas that are on the dog at the time. A better option is the top spot treatment as it lasts for almost a month,” Norton said.

She added that the environment around dogs should also be treated, advising that fleas are found in sandy, shady areas.
