Timber! A 30 metre pine tree narrowly misses home

2011-03-30 00:00

A FAMILY in Southport was given an unwelcome shock on Monday night when a 30 metre high pine tree in their garden came crashing to the ground after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm.

Martie Bezhuidenhout was at home with her nine-year-old daughter at around 7 pm enjoying the thunderstorm when she heard a loud cracking sound.

“It happened so quickly; we were looking at the lightning and actually enjoying it,” Bezhuidenhout said.

“And then all of a sudden one was really loud and it hit the tree.”

The house was also struck by the lightning. Telephone cables, electrical wiring and even the curtains were scorched as a result of the strike.

“We were very lucky that nothing caught on fire,” said Bezhuidenhout.

“But we are still checking all of our appliances to see which ones were damaged.”

Bezhuidenhout hired a gardening service that spent the whole of yesterday cleaning up the tree, the remains of which were all over the property.

“We have had bad storms in the past, but never one that has been this hectic,” she added.

“There was wood absolutely everywhere.”
