Time to make this district safe for children

2009-06-01 00:00

A MARCH marking Child Protection Week took place in the city yesterday as 600 children from primary schools in and around Pietermaritzburg walked from the community safety and liaison department’s headquarters in Jabu Ndlovu Street to Freedom Square.

“This event has been organised in partnership with Msunduzi Municipality, uMgungundlovu District Municipality and the Children to Children Foundation,” said Msunduzi Municipality manager for special programmes, Sanelisiwe Ndlovu.

The theme for the event was “Making uMgungundlovu safe for children”.

Speaking to the children at the event, mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo urged them to get hold of those that can help them should they or their friends ever experience abuse.

“Enough is enough” said Children to Children general manager, Mbuso Madondo, in the event’s theme speech. “We call on everyone here to act and prevent the abuse of children’s rights in our society,” he said. “I stand here, knowing that these young people who make up 32% of our population in this country have been forgotten.

“Today I call this day to make our district and our municipality a safe place for our children to live.”

Speaking to The Witness, Madondo said the march will become an annual event.
