Tip-off: police nab BMW gang in Northdale

2008-12-26 00:00

Police, acting on information that a group of armed men were expected to commit a robbery at a business in Northdale, arrested four men and seized three unlicensed firearms from a vehicle on Christmas Eve.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said members of the SAPS project team at Mountain Rise kept watch after getting a tip-off that five armed men were expected to rob a business in Bombay Road.

At about 7 pm, they noticed a white BMW with five male occupants driving along the road and they followed the vehicle and ordered the driver to stop.

The four passengers in the vehicle jumped out and fled, while the driver remained behind in the vehicle.

Two of the fleeing men were arrested and a third was arrested in the vicinity by members of the SAPS dog unit. A fifth suspect is still at large.

Police found three unlicensed 9 mm handguns inside the BMW, which will be sent for ballistics tests to determine if they have been used to commit any crimes. The vehicle was also impounded.

Budhram said the suspects, between the ages of 25 and 30, are expected to appear in court on Monday.
