Titans edge Dolphins

JACQUES Rudolph capped an excellent day when the Titans beat the Dolphins by six wickets in their Miway T20 Challenge match at Kingsmead yesterday.

Even though the Dolphins took the game to the last ball, Rudolph’s presence always ensured the visitors’ chase was never derailed, despite some disciplined Dolphins bowling.

Having won the toss, Cameron Delport (38 off 17) tore into the Titans bowling, scoring 28 of the first 30 runs. That start was squandered when Loots Bosman (two) played a nothing shot to find himself caught by Rudolph off CJ de Villiers.

Dolphins captain Imraan Khan did not trouble the scorers, lasting just two balls before chipping Henry Davids to David Wiese at mid-on.

Delport continued to cut a swath through the Titans’ bowling, marked by an imperious loft off De Villiers, but the very next ball, De Villiers had his revenge when he had Delport caught at short fine-leg by Wiese after the southpaw periscoped his bat.

The Titans turned the screws, cutting off the singles with vigour.

With the vice being squeezed, it was only a matter of time before the hosts popped, with Vaughn van Jaarsveld run out after responding too slowly to Cody Chetty’s call.

At 51/4 in the seventh over, it seemed like the Dolphins had beached themselves, but Chetty, along with David Miller putting on a record 116-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

While Miller struggled to find his timing, Chetty (63 off 49) picked the gaps well and found the boundaries when needed.

Miller then found his groove and pummelled De Villiers for consecutive sixes, with the second one finding Masalaba Yengwa Avenue.

A few lusty blows by the pair took the Dolphins to a competitive total before Chetty was castled by Alfonso Thomas (1/21).

Chasing 168, the Titans had the worst possible start when they lost Davids (one), caught behind off Mthokozisi Shezi (1/32).

Rudolph and Heino Kuhn (39 off 27) steadied the ship.

Kuhn should have been out on 24 when he feathered a catch to Daryn Smit off Robbie Frylinck, but umpire Brian Jerling thought otherwise. Kuhn shared a 62-run stand with Rudolph before he picked out Miller at long off off Delport (1/42).

The hosts managed to keep it tight for four overs conceding just 20 runs before the Titans helped themselves to 23 runs off Delport’s final over, with captain Martin van Jaarsveld (31 off 18) caning 16 of them.

Rudolph also joined in the fun, lofting Imran Tahir over long off for six and raising the 50 partnership in the process off only 31 balls.

However, the Dolphins brought it back when Frylinck pierced Van Jaarsveld’s defences and Farhaan Behardien (6) followed two overs later when he clipped Kyle Abbott to Bosman at the midwicket boundary.

Just as the Dolphins thought they had a foot in the door, Rudolph and Wiese took Tahir to the cleaners, taking 19 off the 18th over, with Wiese blasting two fours and a huge six.

Rudolph was content to turn over the strike and reached his 50 off 48 balls. Needing 10 off the last over, bowled by Frylinck (1/28), Wiese gave Rudolph the strike, who then drilled consecutive fours to tie the scores. Frylinck ratcheted up the tension with consecutive dot balls before Rudolph settled the issue with a single off the last ball.
