Titans meet their match in Lions’ De Kock and Viljoen

2014-09-29 00:00

THANKS to a display of intimidating bowling from Hardus Viljoen (7-32) the Highveld Lions recorded a 190-run victory over the Titans, who were bowled out for 169, in their Sunfoil match at the Wanderers yesterday.

Play began on the fourth and final day with Theunis de Bruyn and Farhaan Behardien on 20 and six respectively and still needing 310 for victory with six wickets in hand.

The visitors, whose aspirations for a victory were all but scuppered by their only making 197 in their first innings, made unspectacular progress in their second spell at the crease, finishing the third day of the competition on 50 for four.

Seamer Chris Morris took three for four off three overs.

At the onset of the final day’s plan of action, De Bruyn could only add one run to his total before edging a Viljoen delivery to Quinton de Kock, two overs into the day’s play.

Roelof van de Merwe (3), had hardly got into his stride before he followed De Bruyn back to the dressing room, caught and bowled by the aforesaid combination.

Thereafter, the bowlers toiled long and hard, but to no avail, as Behardien and Mangaliso Mosehle knuckled down to put on 81 for the fifth wicket.

It was a tenacious rearguard action from Behardien and Mosehle, but disaster struck in the last over before lunch, Mosehle (52 off 59-balls, which included nine fours) went out on the final delivery before the break, to give Viljoen his third scalp of the morning session.

Post lunch, Viljoen was unplayable, as a flurry of three wickets saw the end of the Titans innings for 169.

With the first ball, he castled Shaun von Berg to put the quickie on a possible hat-trick, which Rowan Richards played forward defensive to in order to survive.

But it was only a brief sojourn, as Richards was out caught behind by De Kock and Ethy Mbhalati was bowled neck-and-crop.

Viljoen finished with a match analysis of 20-11-81-8.

Wicketkeeper De Kock finished with eight catches and he and Viljoen were voted men of the match.
