Titans pull off 27-run win

2014-11-22 00:00

THE Titans, led by a brilliant 75 from Henry Davids, brought the high-flying Highveld Lions down to earth with a resounding 27-run win in a rain-reduced Ram Slam T20 match at Willowmoore Park, Benoni, last night.

The Lions had been set a target of 168 off 16 overs, but they fell spectacularly short, thanks to three tight overs at the start of the innings: Ethy Mbhalati conceded two runs, while taking the wicket of Alviro Petersen, and Junior Dala followed that with a one-run over which sent the run-rate soaring to 12 an over. When Mbhalati snapped up the valuable wicket of Chris Gayle for 11, the target was over the horizon.

For the Lions, it was lash and crash, losing Temba Bavuma and Neil McKenzie for just 52 runs by the halfway stage. The effort of Jean Symes and Dwaine Pretorius, who took 52 runs off four overs, was too little, too late. Pretorius was undone by Darren Sammy for 27 (2x4, 2x6), while Symes ended unbeaten with a valiant 57 off 32 balls, with seven fours and two sixes.

The standard had been set by Davids.
