Ton-up new boy and old pro steal the show

2009-10-24 00:00

IT was a case of the old and the new at the Maritzburg Oval Friday when 35-year-old KZN Inland player/coach Doug Watson and young debutant Chad Barron struck impressive centuries against reigning provincial three-day champs Griqualand West.

At the close, Griquas were 103 for two after 28 overs, following Inland’s first-innings 300 for four at their 85-over compulsory declaration.

Inland were asked to bat by Wendell Bossenger and the decision might have paid off for the Griquas captain, but for a crucial dropped catch.

Inland’s opening partnership woes continued to plague them. Second over of the match, which was into its second day after Thursday was washed out, Mario Olivier was dropped at third slip off Roy Adams with the total 12. The luckless Adams’ next over saw Barron grassed at second slip with his score 8 and the total 17.

But in the following over, left-arm quick Charl Pietersen bowled Olivier for 10, the total 21.

To his great credit, Barron kept grafting, playing and missing frequently, but interspersed with quality boundaries. His new partner, Brad Moses, was in sublime form and he cut Adams square for a boundary before striking a magnificent six over wide mid-off next ball.

After the new ball’s deception through the early-morning air, the pitch flattened out and after an 62-run second-wicket stand, Moses was bowled with the perfect in-ducker from the impressive Granville de Wee.

Enter Doug Watson, and the old pro and his “new boy” proceeded to add 147 for the third wicket.
