'Tony Tractor': ride reaches Nelspruit

2010-08-30 00:00

HOWICK resident Tony Psaila is three weeks into his epic round-the-world journey on a tractor to raise funds and awareness for survivors of rape and violence

“Tony Tractor”, as he’s also known, left Howick on August 9 aboard his customised 1948 Ferguson and is currently in Nelspruit. So far he’s travelled through Durban, Empangeni, Vryheid, Piet Retief and Barberton, stopping along the way to give talks to community organisations and schools

This is not Psaila’s first such tractor trip. In 2006 he drove from Beitbridge to Cape Town to raise awareness for the South Africa National Blood Service and raised R100 000 for the Midlands Crisis and Trauma Centre in Howick.

He was inspired to do this after surviving being shot and wounded in an armed hold-up. His round-the-world trip will raise funds for his The World Fund for Victims of Violence and Rape initiative.

Chugging along at 22 km/h, Psaila hopes to circle to Cape Town by the end of the year. The entire journey will take between five and seven years. — WR.
