Too many visitors has Ballito unable to flush

2011-12-24 00:00

A DESPERATE water shortage in Ballito on the North Coast left businesses and residents high and dry yesterday, but Umgeni Water says the worst is over.

Spokesperson Shami Harichunder said night-time water cuts have allowed the Avondale reservoir to refill, with water pumped from Hazelmere dam. The “reservoir is now at 57%, much higher than anticipated”, he said. However, users still need to be careful.

There has been an increase in demand by about 300%, resulting in a sharp decrease in the level of the reservoir since Tuesday, largely due to the number of visitors to the popular holiday destination.

Umgeni Water also warned in October that massive industrial and residential development north of Durban was putting pressure on the provision of water.

The utility plans to upgrade the infrastructure next year.

Coleen Trollip, a manager at Ocean Blue Accommodation, said her guests have been understanding about the 9 pm to 6 am cuts.

However, Arnold Moyo, the manager at Primi Piatti restaurant, said having no tap water means they can’t serve coffee or flush their toilets, and that has turned customers away.
