Top award for dedicated Durban nurse

2013-05-08 00:00

AN overwhelmed Sister Eugenia Myeza received the Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing at Addington Hospital in Durban on Monday.

The award was launched by Bio Oil in 2011 to acknowledge the hard work and service of community nurses. Winning nurses are chosen for upholding the virtues of Florence Nightingale, which are dedication, compassion and a belief in quality care for all.

Nightingale is famous for her work in the military hospitals during the Crimean War in the 1850s and for established nursing as a respectable profession for women.

Six nurses across the country received the award. Myeza was the KZN recipient and was nominated by the staff at Addington Hospital where she works.

“This was so unexpected. I have never won an award before. I am very excited and happy,” Myeza told The Witness. “I want to thank everyone who nominated and voted for me. It was very nice. We are even having a party in the ward where I work to celebrate.”

Acting nursing manager B. T. Green is proud of Myeza. “Despite all the negative press Addington Hospital has received in the past, the nursing staff have worked hard to maintain the highest standards to the best of our ability. The staff nominated Sister Eugenia because she is very dedicated to her work. You always see her in the corridors or rooms working hard,” said Green.

After receiving her award and the brief celebration, Myeza went straight back to work. “This award makes me want to work harder …” she said.

Myeza also received R5 000 prize money. Bio Oil has also pledged R10 per nomination to the hospitals in each region with the most entries. The money will be used to upgrade nurses’ facilities, with almost R27 000 to be awarded across the regions.

Said Jacqui Caley, training and congresses manager with Bio-Oil: “… The donations towards the nurses’ facilities will hopefully help make their well-deserved breaks a little bit more comfortable.”

The timing is also significant as it is International Nurses Day on May 12, which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
