Top cop: no mercy for ‘bad apples’

2010-02-22 00:00

PROVINCIAL Police Commissioner Mamunye Ngobeni has warned all bad apples in the police force they will be removed without hesitation.

Her statement comes after KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, announced last Friday at the MEC’s Community Awards for Police Excellence in Durban that police officers who “flirt” with criminals must be exposed, isolated and thrown into jail without delay.

Mchunu also said that to help clean up Durban ahead of the Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup, the province will launch a crime-fighting programme, known as “Operation Hlasela”, which means “declare war”. The exercise is aimed at making Durban a “liberated zone” for the tournament.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mchunu said: “All details will be announced at the state of the province address. All that I can safely say is that life is going to be very tough for criminals. We have enough resources. As criminals feel the heat in Durban, we will be waiting in Pietermaritzburg. As they go into hiding in the rural areas, they will find us there. They must surrender or face fire."
