Top match: College will need to up game in St Charles clash

2010-10-16 00:00

TODAY sees another full programme of school’s cricket, but again likely to be curtailed by the weather conditions that have been forecast. There is only one top game in the capital, however, it will be followed with much interest.

In 2009, the much-anticipated first Saturday match between St Charles and Maritzburg College for many years was washed out without a ball being bowled. The only other times they have met in recent times has been in the schools’ day/night series.

Looking at the results of the two schools this year College should be favourites. After losing to Kearsney last week, College players, both bowling and batting, will need to up their game. St Charles will go all out as they have nothing to lose and this should make for an interesting tussle.

College will have the confidence of having beaten St Charles twice this year, once in a 20/20 game and the other in the 40-over Sunfoil Night Series. College do seem to have lost some of their sharpness that they had in the first term which makes previous history negligible in the context of today’s match.

A team that has been very successful this season, Durban High School will be hosting Kearsney, the only unbeaten KZN team against local opposition.

The final winners of today’s match will probably be the side that bowls the better line and reduces the opposition chances of too many scoring shots from loose balls.

Glenwood, who missed out on a game last Saturday, host Hilton. Hilton batting let them down last week and they will need to improve today if they wish to be competitive. If Glenwood can play at the level of some of their matches at Michaelmas Week then the game is for the taking, but it does depend on which Glenwood side pitches for the game as they have been inconsistent.

Northwood travel to play Westville. The home side will have a chance to regain some confidence after some disappointing games this season.

Selected games (home side first): St Charles vs Maritzburg College; DHS vs Kearsney; Glenwood vs Hilton; Michaelhouse vs Clifton; Westville vs Northwood; Howick vs Maritzburg College II; Kloof vs Carter; Hillcrest vs Kingsway; Treverton vs Michaelhouse II; Voortrekker vs Pinetown; Alexandra vs Wartburg; Crawford NC vs Crawford LL; Grosvenor vs Sunfoil; Linpark vs Woodlands
