Top rugby ‘like a blue movie’

2014-06-05 00:00

CAPE TOWN — “The top rugby being played today is like watching a blue movie. If you have seen one, you have seen them all,” according to Dr Divan Serfontein, former Springbok captain and Western Province player.

And he is not the only man frustrated by the form of the modern game.

Jan “Boland” Coetzee said there are too many refs and rules, while Charl Marais confessed he had been to more theatre events lately than rugby matches at Newlands.

The three rugby lovers were debating the state of the game at the ArtsCape theatre with the historian Hermann Giliomee and Saartjie Botha, who wrote the play Balbesit .

Serfontein, who is these days a director at a pharmaceutical company, said all sports had a social responsibility, which rugby could meet by getting involved with prisoners. “The places where I think we have the most talent are in our prisons.”

He said South Africa’s prisons held more than 150 000 people, close to a third of whom are young.

“I say let’s get these guys on a rugby field so that they can blow off some steam. Then we will find talent … he may get a career. Can you think how wonderful it will be to get a guy out of prison who plays Springbok rugby?”
