Top schools return to Clifton College for some water polo action

2014-09-18 00:00

CLIFTON College hosts the 10th annual Nashua Clifton water polo tournament from September 25 to 28.

Over the years, the event has gained momentum and is one of the country’s top events, attracting 16 teams this year to Clifton’s Olympic standard aquatic centre.

Started in 2005, the event showcases a rich talent of players who play with pride and passion for their school over the four days. Teams are divided into four pools and each day is packed with action, culminating in the final to be played at 1 pm on Sunday, September 28.

Participating schools this year are Clifton College, Affies, Bishops, DHS, Hilton, Jeppe, Kearsney, KES, Maritzburg College, Reddam House, St Alban’s, St David’s Marist College, St John’s College, St Peter’s College, St Stithians and Westville Boys’ High.

With such a potent line-up of contenders vying for the overall winner’s spoils, the school that emerges triumphant will proudly reflect on a job well done.

Past winners of the tournament include Maritzburg College, St John’s College, Clifton and Reddam House and the event allows many SA U18 players the opportunity to showcase their skills in the pool.

Water polo has grown tremendously at school level in recent years, with the hosts of the tournament currently ranked number one in the country.

Last year, Clifton won all three age groups at the Top Ten water polo tournament and the overall Top Ten trophy.

Updates, stats, results and photographs from the tournament will be available at www.cliftonschool.co.za.
