Top shops for Edendale mall

2011-05-09 00:00

THE R350 million, 32 000-square-metre Edendale Mall is more than 50% complete and on track for its opening on October 27.

The site is abuzz with activity and about 560 people are hard at work building the retail facility. The foundations and most of the steelwork are complete. The majority of the workers — amounting to 323 people, including 23 women — are locals.

The mall is expected to create more than 1 000 jobs and will boast 107 tenants.

Speaking to The Witness at a recent site visit, Jason McCormick, of McCormick Property Development, said a few key areas have already been completed, including sites that will house Pick n Pay (3 500 square metres) and the taxi rank.

New Ground Investments and McCormick Property Development are partners in the venture.

The site that will house Shoprite (3 500 square metres) is about 85% complete, as is the work relating to the wetland.

Construction firm Grinaker-LTA is the main contractor involved in the project.

Catering to the needs of local residents and commuters, the developers have worked closely with the taxi industry to develop a public transport facility at the mall which includes 288 parking bays.

The mall will also have 806 bays for private cars.

Skylights will be used throughout the mall.

The food court will boast a giant umbrella-like structure that will serve as an attractive centre piece for the complex.

The banking area will house all four major banks in one form or another. McCormick said Absa (560 square metres), Standard Bank (450 square metres) and Nedbank (450 square metres) will establish branches, while FNB will establish an EasyPlan outlet.

He added that beneficial occupation of both the Shoprite and Pick n Pay sites will take place in less than 60 days.

THE LOCATION:

THE mall is at the intersection of Moses Mabhida Road (Edendale Road) and Mount Partridge Road at the site of the old Qokololo Stadium.
